For the starting version. Each part is measured the same way for every laptop (processor and graphics from benchmark results) and moves up or down with what reviewers praise or criticise.

Pros

  • Big jump in speed over the M3 base model
  • Now starts with 16GB memory and drives two external monitors
  • Bright mini-LED screen and strong speakers
  • Quiet for normal work and long runtimes
  • M4 Pro is faster than the older M3 Max in many tasks
  • Matte option makes the bright screen usable outside
  • Near-silent in daily use

Cons

  • One fan, so it gets noisy when pushed for long
  • Memory and storage upgrades cost a lot
  • Screen flickers (PWM), nothing can be upgraded later
  • Only a year of warranty, no Wi-Fi 7
  • Speed drops when CPU and GPU are loaded together
  • Keyboard area gets hot under load
  • Constant PWM flicker and slow pixel response
  • NotebookcheckNov 2024

Tested base M4 10/10-core, 16GB/512GB: the entry model finally gets 16GB, a third Thunderbolt port and two external screens, with class-leading single-core speed; the lone fan is its weak spot.

  • NotebookcheckNov 2024

Tested M4 Pro 14/20-core, 48GB/2TB with nano-texture: the M4 Pro often beats last year's M3 Max and the matte screen works well outdoors, but it runs hot under load and battery life did not improve over M3.

  • TechRadarNov 2024

    Tested base M4 16GB/512GB with nano-texture: a pro-level portable that impresses everywhere; about 18.5 hours in TechRadar's web-browsing test (sub-scores 4-5 out of 5).

  • Laptop MagNov 2024

Tested base M4 16GB/1TB with nano-texture (Editor's Choice): as close to a perfect laptop as the reviewer has seen, lasting 18h32m in Laptop Mag's web test.

  • ITProAug 2025

Tested base M4 16GB/1TB: worth buying in any configuration and superb as a work laptop; ran 20 hours in ITPro's looped video test with 4% still left.
