Pros

  • Workout heart rate close to a chest strap
  • Quick GPS lock with distance near multi-band watches
  • Bright AMOLED screen
  • About a week per charge
  • Heart rate within a few beats of a chest strap
  • Accurate GPS routes
  • Vibrant AMOLED screen

Cons

  • Sleep sometimes overstated by about an hour
  • No barometric altimeter
  • Plain design
  • No Training Readiness
  • Occasional heart-rate spikes
  • No altimeter for floors or elevation
  • No ECG
  • Wareable2023

Average and max heart rate in runs, gym and HIIT were close to a Garmin HRM Pro+ chest strap (with occasional random spikes) and GPS distances stayed near a multi-band Forerunner 965 and Apple Watch Ultra 2; sleep can be over-counted by about an hour. A good-value all-rounder, but runners should look at a Forerunner.

  • Android AuthorityAug 2024

On a run with sprints it stayed within 2-3 bpm of a Polar H10 chest strap and its routes matched a Venu 3; a cheaper take on the Venu 3 that is good for most active people, though not as precise as top Garmins.

  • Tech AdvisorOct 2023

Distance and pace were in line with a dual-band Apple Watch Ultra 2 and a multi-band Forerunner 965; heart rate kept up with a chest strap at steady effort but slipped in very hard efforts. Good sport, smart and wellbeing features for less than a Venu.

  • Tom's GuideOct 2023

A fuller health and fitness coach than the Vivoactive 4 at a fair price, but less intuitive than an Apple Watch; sleep data did not line up with an Oura ring, and no heart-rate reference test was done.

Reported by many owners

Common complaints

  • After a January 2025 update many owners reported faster battery drain and poor sleep detection; Garmin released 12.12 with general bug fixes
  • In late January 2025 many Garmin watches including the Vivoactive 5 froze on a blue triangle or restarted when starting a GPS activity; Garmin acknowledged it and suggested a power cycle
