For the starting version. Each part is measured the same way for every laptop (processor and graphics from benchmark results) and moves up or down with what reviewers praise or criticise.

Pros

  • Solid build
  • Excellent, very bright screen
  • Very high performance
  • Long battery life
  • Good speakers
  • Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt 5 and very fast SSD
  • Excellent battery life

Cons

  • Severe throttling with the M5 Max
  • Inconsistent CPU speed
  • 96W charger is too small for the M5 Max
  • Screen flickers (PWM) and responds slowly
  • One-year warranty, hardly serviceable
  • No Face ID webcam
  • No new design
  • Tested the M5 Max (18-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 128GB/8TB, matte mini-LED): a very good multimedia laptop, but the 14-inch body can't cool the M5 Max, so performance swings and drops; the M5 Pro suits this size better.

  • TechRadarMar 2026

Added the M5 Pro (15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB/1TB) to its M5 review: a superb workstation with a stunning screen, but a small upgrade for M3/M4 owners unless you want AI tools.

  • CG MagazineMar 2026

Tested a 14-inch M5 Pro with nano-texture screen: an iterative but strong update, worth it for M1/M2/Intel owners; video exports 15-20% faster than the plain M5 and storage up to twice as fast.
